چکیده

In contrast to non-cohesive sediments, the incipient motion of cohesive sediments is characterized by much more complex interactions between several sedimentary, biological, and chemical parameters. Thus, site-specific investigations are required to obtain information about the erosion stability of cohesive materials. This becomes even more relevant for contaminated sediments, stored in riverine sediments as a “burden of the past”, because of their remobilization potential during flood events. This article represents a twofold measuring strategy for the detection of erosion thresholds: an in situ device for determination of critical shear stresses in the field, and a laboratory approach where sediment cores are withdrawn and subsequently analyzed over depth. The combined measuring strategy was applied in the River Elbe and at selected sites of the catchment of the River Saale. The results show a great variety of erosion thresholds over depth, demonstrating the need to conduct vertical analyses, especially when addressing buried layers with contaminations. The latter is only possible in the laboratory but the in situ device revealed clear benefits in capturing the loose flocculent layer on top of the sediment that might be easily lost during sediment retrieval and transport. Consequently, it is ideal to combine both approaches for a comprehensive insight into sediment stability. OPEN ACCESS

Prediction of Cohesive Sediment Erosion Rate and Analyzing the Effective Parameters Using Artificial Neural Network

Transferring mechanic of cohesive sediments are different from non-cohesive sediments. For determining the erosion rate of non-cohesive sediments, physical parameters such as average diameter and density are used, such as average diameter and density. Due to the nature of the cohesive sediments, their erosion rates are determined interrelated with the shear stress of the bed with fixed coeffici...

ارائه رابطه رگرسیونی برای تعیین نرخ فرسایش رسوبات چسبنده به کمک داده‌های آزمایشگاهی و مدل عددی

Cohesive sediments have large specific surfaces which enable them to absorb other cohesive sediments and polar particles such as mud and sodium. Floccules form by joining these particles. The behavior of cohesive sediments in aquatic environments is completely different from that of granular sediments. Under certain value of shear stress, the structure formed from cohesive sediments is divided ...

Modélisation du transport des sédiments mixtes sable-vase et application à la morphodynamique de l’estuaire de la Gironde

This study attempts to model sediment transport rates and the resulting bed evolution in a complex estuarine environment: the Gironde estuary, characterized by a high hetereogeneity in the sediment bed composition, with the presence of both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments and sand/mud mixtures. Our main objective is to extend an existing 2D morphodynamic model developped by Huybrechts et al...

Effect the kind of sediments on Scour Cone in Pressure Flushing

The accumulation of sediments in reservoirs of dams has always been one of the problems of reservoir dams. Accordingly, one of the approaches to address this problem can be referred to as the method of pressure flushing. In this method, during the course of flushing, generally the bottom drainage outlets of the dam are opened for a certain period of time and the reservoir water level is kept al...
